Greyhound Bus Museum

It'll transport you back in time!

Hibbing is recognized as the birthplace of the bus industry in the United States.  Visitors can now see and hear the story at Hibbing's newest attraction.

To start the tour, visitors pass through a tunnel that comes alive with auto sounds of 1914 and continues on with a Hupmobile that could not be sold and the men and machines that created Greyhound Bus Lines.  Using pictorial displays, hundreds of artifacts and memorabilia, audio visual presentations plus a movie of the "Greyhound Story - From Hibbing to Everywhere," the museum traces the history of the bus industry.

Seven historical buses are on display, from a 1927 White to the "1956 Scenicruiser" and a "1948 Silverside," illustrating Greyhound's contribution to the WWII war effort with service personnel boarding the bus and the ever present Salvation Army serving them coffee and donuts. A 1964 "Escortor," used to transport the handicapped around the 1964 New York World's Fair, is on exhibit with the Greyhound mascot as the driver.  The children get a thrill by sitting in the drivers seat of the buses and pretending that they are the driver's.

Proceeding to the outside exhibits, including eleven more historical buses, is a diorama of a 1916 bus being built. Also on display is a "before and after" of two Brill buses, and a bus restoration of the skeleton of an Eagle Bus and a completed Eagle illustrates what the bus looks like before the "skin" is applied. A display of a Hall - Scott "pancake" engine, which is placed in the center of the bus, is a popular exhibit. An exhibit of a 1980 bus that was used to transport oil workers in Saudi Arabia is on display and painted along its side is a mural of the desert with oil rigs and a camel.  There are also two buses at the museum that have been converted to motor homes.  A 1930-1940's "Art Deco" terminal and a "flag stop" building plus seven replicas of terminals from the 1920's to the 1950's show the changes in design of the Greyhound Terminals.

Visit the Greyhound Bus Museum and see how the Greyhound did to rubber, what the railroad did to steel in bringing America together.  After the tour of the museum, relax in the beautiful rose garden that was planted by the Chisholm/Hibbing Garden Club.  Yes, there is something for everyone!
