Mesabi Iron Range

Minnesota's Iron Range gained fame because of its rich supply of iron ore. While mining and production of taconite, an iron ore concentrate, is still important in the area, the Iron Range is becoming known for its rich history and as a recreation destination that encompasses many beautiful and significant forests. Also home to some of the world's largest open-pit mines, the Mesabi Iron Range is made up of many vital communities that each offer unique recreational and cultural opportunities.

Minnesota has ranked as one of the top two America's "Most Livable State," by Morgan Quitno Press, for nearly a decade. This award was based on 43 factors including home ownership rate, job growth, percent of population graduated from high school, electricity prices and per capita personal income, among other indicators.

Minnesota was also the third healthiest state in the country in 2000. This award was based on 21 factors including but not limited to health care expenditure as a percent of gross state product, age-adjusted death rate and beds in community hospitals per 100,000 population. Minnesota's workers are among the most educated and productive in the country, with a proven history of a strong work ethic. Educational facilities in northeastern Minnesota take pride in an excellent educational system that serves preschoolers through adults.

Health Care

For primary and secondary health care needs, few rural areas are better equipped than northeastern Minnesota. The region is served by two major health care systems, St. Mary's/Duluth Clinic Health System and Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi. In addition, the area is served by numerous private practice physicians located in smaller clinics, as well as by many metropolitan-based consultants. Dentistry and orthodontic specialty clinics are available in almost every community in the region and psychiatric care, chiropractic clinics and chemical dependency clinics are also easily accessible throughout the region.

Work Force

As the labor market tightens, employers are facing increasing difficulty in recruiting skilled workers in metro areas, and companies looking to fill open employment positions are beginning to look toward northeastern Minnesota.

The people in northeastern Minnesota are known for their work ethic, dedication and loyalty to employers. The Minnesota State Planning Agency reports that the region?s employee-turnover percentage rate is significantly lower than other parts of Minnesota and the nation.

Northeastern Minnesota is a stronghold of participatory management, with companies such as Minnesota Power, an ALLETE company, and Reptron Electronics giving employees a say in how work is performed and empowering them to make decisions. Such companies are developing new work systems to improve productivity, and the workforce is part of the change process.

Technology: Connecting Northeastern Minnesota to the Information Age

In a land where wilderness abounds, the last thing anyone would have expected to take firm root is the Information Age. Still, northeastern Minnesota is quickly becoming one of the most technologically equipped rural areas in the nation. Technology centers, high-tech industrial parks, colleges and training programs, extensive telecommunications infrastructure - the list of efforts to equip the region for the new economy is long.

Housing

More Minnesotans than ever own their homes. Only one out of four occupied housing units in Minnesota is rented, while 74.6 percent of housing is occupied by the owner of the property. These same high rates hold true in the northeastern part of the state.
